A pamphlet issued by the Tolson Memorial Museum, Huddersfield, and entitled, "The Mining Industry in the Huddersfield district," by Dr. D. A. Wray, gives the interesting information that although there were 116 coal pits in the vicinity of Huddersfield, Halifax, Dewsbury, and Holmfirth, 70 years ago, producing about one-fourth of the county's coal output, the number of working pits in the corresponding area to-day is under 40.
