Huddersfield's Roll of Honour: 1914-1922

The following extract is from Huddersfield's Roll of Honour: 1914-1922 (2014) by J. Margaret Stansfield:

SYKES, WILLIE. Corporal. No 12088. 9th Battalion Duke of Wellington's Regiment. Born Holmfirth. Son of the late Mr and Mrs Benjamin Sykes of Holmfirth. Lived 6 Newgate, Holmfirth. Educated at Holmfirth National School. Employed at Queens Mill, Huddersfield. Enlisted 4.9.1914. After training he embarked for France in July, 1915. Killed in action at Contalmaison on 7.7.1916 during the Battle of the Somme. He was 26 years of age. Has no known grave. Commemorated THIEPVAL MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING.
