William Shaw was a brewer who married into the Bentley family.

Biography

He was born circa 1793, possibly in Leicestershire.

He married Ann Bentley, eldest daughter of Lockwood Brewery founder Timothy Bentley, in April 1815 at All Hallows, Almondbury. The couple had three known children:

He likely built Woodfield House at Lockwood as his family home.

Following the death of his father-in-law in 1830, he became manager of the brewery.

Ann died in September 1838 aged 44.[3]

William Shaw died on 30 September 1840 aged 47 whilst visiting the Isle of Man "for the benefit of his health".[4] His body was returned to Lockwood where he was buried alongside his wife.

  1. Born 15 May 1817 and baptised at Lockwood Baptist Chapel, Lockwood. Married merchant William Wright, son of George Wright of Hull, on 2 June 1841 at All Hallows, Almondbury. Residing at Kirk Ella (near Hull) in 1851 Census.
  2. Born 27 February 1823 at Lockwood. Married Robert Carr (c.1821-1865) and was a widow (aged 68) residing at Thorne near Doncaster in the 1891 Census.
  3. "Deaths" in Bradford Observer (20/Sep/1838).
  4. "Died" in Leeds Mercury (03/Oct/1840). The newspaper reports his age at 48, but it is recorded as 47 in the burial register.
