According to Holmfirth: Place-Names and Settlement (1994) by George Redmonds, Wickleden was one of the earliest settlements in Scholes with the surname "de Wilkleden" in use as early as the 13th century. Redmonds suggests that the name has three parts — "quick" (quick-set hedge) "leah" (woodland clearing) "den" (valley). Variant spellings include Quickeledene, Whitlayedene, Wikleden, and Whyckleden.[1]
