The following extract is from Huddersfield's Roll of Honour: 1914-1922 (2014) by J. Margaret Stansfield:
- SYKES, WALTER. Lance Corporal. No PO/1440 (S). Royal Marine Light Infantry. 2nd Royal Marine Battalion, Royal Naval Division. Born Kirkheaton. Son of the late Mr William and Mrs Sykes, Hillside, Kirkheaton. Employed by Messrs Broadhead and Graves Limited, Kirkheaton. Was a teacher at the Kirkheaton Church Sunday School. Killed in action, 10.7.1917, aged 24 years. Buried ORCHARD DUMP CEMETERY. Grave location:- Plot 6, Row B, Grave 50.
