Votes for Women (20/Jun/1913) - Another Woman as "Half a J.P."

The following is a transcription of a historic newspaper article and may contain occasional errors. If the article was published prior to 1 June 1957, then the text is likely in the Public Domain.

Another woman, Miss Emily Frances Seddon, chairman of the Huddersfield Board of Guardians, has been appointed Justice of the Peace for the certification of lunatics — the second woman to receive this appointment. A better choice could scarcely have been made, for Miss Seddon has been a Guardian for thirty-one years, and was one of the first women in the country to take up poor-law work. How absurd that such a woman should be held fit to judge the insane, but not to judge the sane — how absurd that she should only half a J.P.!
