Originally set in extensive grounds and built by Joseph Kaye for John Horsfall, the building gave its name to the Thornton Lodge area.

By 1905, the building had been divided into five separate parts. By 1930, part of the property had become the home of Thornton Lodge Bowling Club with a bowling green situated on the other side of Brook Street.
