Holmfirth: Place-Names and Settlement (1994) by George Redmonds:

Although the earliest recorded reference to Stalley Royd is 1525, the place-name tells us of two much earlier phases of clearance on this hill side; "royd", dating from c.1200 and "ley" from the Old English period. Because the spellings are so late it is difficult to be certain exactly what the first element means, but if a comparison with Stalybridge is valid it may originally have been "Staveley" — the clearing where staves were obtained.
