Huddersfield's Roll of Honour: 1914-1922

The following extract is from Huddersfield's Roll of Honour: 1914-1922 (2014) by J. Margaret Stansfield:

RACE, SPENCER. Private. No SPTS/869. 23rd (Sportsman's) Battalion Royal Fusiliers. Born Deepcar. Formerly lived at Scissett. Was a keen footballer and played with the Scissett Association football team. Fatally wounded on 13.11.1916. His Platoon Commander wrote to his sister, Mrs G. Tyas to tell her that her brother, "was hit in the stomach by a machine gun bullet on 13.11.1916 and died a few hours after being carried into a dugout". Has no known grave. Commemorated THIEPVAL MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING.
