This page is currently under construction and isn't complete yet!The Slaithwaite Spinning Company was a cotton manufacturing firm established circa 1877.
In August 1881, the company successfully tested experimental electric lighting.[1]
The company constructed a new mill in the late 1880s. After the mill's chimney was completed, a steeplejack began removing the scaffolding but was left stranded when the rope he needed for the descent accidentally fell to the ground. A large crowd gathered to watch and were bemused to see the steeplejack take off his socks. A short while later, he had managed to unravel the socks and let down a long thread to which the rope was then attached. He was able to pull the rope back up and then safely made his descent.
