The following extract is from Huddersfield's Roll of Honour: 1914-1922 (2014) by J. Margaret Stansfield:

LOWNDES, SAM. Lance Coporal. No 713. 18th Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment. Born Holmfirth. Son of Charles and Ellen Lowndes of Keighley. Killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1.7.1916, aged 27 years. Buried MESNIL COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION. Grave location:- Plot 2, Row A, Grave 7A.
