Royd (toponymy)

A royd (from the Old English rod) is a clearing, e.g. in a wood, or an area of land that has been fully cleared of vegetation and trees (a process sometimes referred to as "assarting") to make it fit for arable purposes.

Yorkshire Historical Dictionary
