In his will, estate agent Robert J. Whitehead (died 1935) stipulated that the residue of his estate should be used "to acquire a freehold or leasehold plot of land in Deighton and erect eight almshouses thereon at a cost not exceeding £500 each, and to invest the balance for the endowment thereof, the said almshouses to be for the occupation of poor persons resident in Woodhouse and any adjoining parish".[1]

The almshouse are now managed by a charitable trust[2]
