Richard Bower (1796-1870)

Manufacturer Richard Bower of Holmfirth was one of the jurors at the inquest into the Holmfirth Flood of 1852.

Biography

He was born on 4 May 1796 in the township of Upperthong.

He married Ann Thewlis in June 1832 and they had at least four children:

  • Hannah Bower (1833-1913)[1]
  • Elizabeth Bower (1834-1900)[2]
  • Mary Barber Bower (1837-1900)[3]
  • Richard Bower (c.1845-?)

At the time of the 1851 Census, he was a woollen manufacturer residing at Upper Bridge.

He died on 14 February 1870 and was buried at St. John's, Upperthong.

Huddersfield Chronicle (19/Feb/1870):

DEATH OF MR. RICHARD BOWER. — We have this week to record the death of Mr. Richard Bower, which took place on Monday, at his residence, Carr Field Terrace. Mr. Bower, who was 73 years of age, has been connected with Upperbridge Sunday School nearly all his life, and always took great interest in Sunday school work. He was a staunch Churchman, and supporter of Conservative principles, but never took any active part in politics. He was also a member of the Upperthong Local Board for several years. The remains of the deceased were interred at St. John's Church, on Thursday, the funeral cortege being preceded by a number of teachers and wardens belonging to St. John's schools, as a mark of esteem and respect.
