The first sod of the reservoir was cut by Joe Lancaster, chairman of Netherthong Local Board, on Friday 29 April 1892.[2] Built by G. W. Naylor of Denby to plans by Joshua Barrowclough of Holmfirth, it was completed and formally opened in December 1892 and had a reported capacity of 1,125,000 gallons.[3]
