The cornerstones were laid on Saturday 12 May 1883 by Alderman Woodhead (Huddersfield), Mr. D. Dawson (Milnsbridge), Mr J. Taylor (Golcar), and Mr. S. Mitchell (Golcar). The reported cost was "upwards of £3,500".[1]
