The foundation stone was laid in January 1883 by Alderman Alfred Walker J.P. and was built by masons Messrs. Stead & Kaye.[1]

The school was opened on Monday 18 August 1884 by the town's Mayor, Alderman Wright Mellor, who had been the Chairman of the first School Board from 1871 to 1874.[2]
