New Mill Brewery, New Mill
Details
- location: Sheffield Road, New Mill
- status: still exists but now in different use
- category: brewery
According to Timothy Bentley: Master Brewer of Yorkshire (1998) by Anthony Avis, it was Robert Bentley (song of Lockwood Brewery founder Timothy Bentley), who "established a malting and brewery" at New Mill. The brewery's manager was Frank Littlewood. After Robert's death in 1850, Avis stated that no records survived for the brewery in the company's archives after 1860 and it likely closed in the mid-1860s.
The brewery was sold by auction at the end of 1874:[1]
All those valuable PREMISES, situate in the centre of New Mill, known as the New Mill Brewery, including the Draper's Shop and three Dwelling Houses. The Brewery premises form a most desirable site for a cotton, woollen, paper, or corn mill. The supply of water is abundant, soft and pure. The turnpike road bounds the property on two sides.
