Holmfirth: Place-Names and Settlement (1994) by George Redmonds:

This was probably the home of the "del Mere" family in the 14th century, but the surname did not survive and Robert Meltham was the tenant in the early 1400s. The "mere" or pool from which the surname derived may have been on the stream just below the house, but this would be difficult to prove. What is certain is that Mear House gave its name to a bridge which linked hamlets such as Butterley with Scholes.
