Martha Hinchliffe (Holmfirth Flood of 1852)

This page is part of the Holmfirth Flood Project which aims to make content available to researchers in advance of the 175th anniversary of the 1852 Flood which will be commemorated in 2027.

The local Huddersfield newspapers initially reported that a body taken to the New Inn at Hinchliffe Mill had been identified as Martha Hinchliffe. However, the body was subsequently identified by John Charlesworth as his daughter Ruth.

No person of the name Martha Hinchliffe (or variations of the surname) was found during research. It may be that someone had said the body looked like "Martha from Hinchliffe" (i.e. Hinchliffe Mill) and this identification was misinterpreted.
