Holmfirth: Place-Names and Settlement (1994) by George Redmonds:
In Old English this word is said to have signified "a marshy stream", but its plural use in Wooldale, where it was originally linked with Shaley, may just have referred to a particularly marshy area. The highway between Hepworth and Upperthong passed this way and the settlement dates from at least 1597 when John Charlesworth held the property.
