The Kirkheaton Mental Improvement Society was formed in 1849 or early 1850 in connection with the local Independent Chapel.
At the first annual soirée, held in March 1851 in the Independent Chapel's school rooms, Henry Dyson's report noted that the institution currently had 56 scholars attending the evening classes.
