Joseph Sykes (1819-1854)


Joseph was born in Stainland, Huddersfield the son of John Sykes (c.1786-1863) and Nanny Walker on the 10th March 1819.

He married Betty Quarmby (1822-1877), daughter of John and Sarah Quarmby, on the 25th August 1847 in Huddersfield. The couple lived at Croft House, Outlane, and had four children:

Joseph was a manufacturer of fancy woollens and owned a quarter share of Gosport Mills, Outlane, of which the Sykes Family owned up until 1927.

Joseph died on the 19th June 1854 at the age of 35, after suffering from apoplexy for 12 hours. He left a wife and three children.
