John William Gargrave (1879-1918)

Huddersfield's Roll of Honour: 1914-1922

The following extract is from Huddersfield's Roll of Honour: 1914-1922 (2014) by J. Margaret Stansfield:

GARGRAVE, JOHN WILLIAM. Sapper. No 358445. 5th Field Company, Royal Engineers. Formerly No 15426 Duke of Wellington's Regiment. Born Kirby Malzeard near Ripon, Yorkshire, 24.5.1879. Husband of Hannah Gargrave, 71 Dewhurst Road, Fartown, and father of five children. Employed as a tram driver by Huddersfield Corporation Tramways. Enlisted 15.2.1915. Went to the Dardenelles. Had also served in Egypt and later in France. Had been wounded twice. Killed in action, 29.3.1918, aged 38 years. Has no known grave. Commemorated POZIERES MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING
