Huddersfield Philosophical Society

History

The Huddersfield Scientific & Mechanics' Institute was formed in 1825. Following a majority vote of 34 in favour and 17 against, it was renamed the Huddersfield Philosophical Society in September 1836.[1]

The society appears to have been struggling by the mid-1850s and, following the absconsion of the secretary Mr. Ward Ryder in the summer of 1856, it was discovered that there was "a deficiency of more than £20" in the finances. At a meeting held on Tuesday 26 August 1856, the members and shareholders seemingly agreed to begin winding up the society.[2]
