Huddersfield Harriers

The Huddersfield Harriers (also initially known as the Huddersfield Clarence Harriers) was formed in 1884 with headquarters at 17 Dundas Street, Huddersfield, and was a branch of the Huddersfield Clarence Bicycle Club. According to the Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News, the Cheshire Tally-Ho and Leeds Harriers' clubs had held running events in Huddersfield and this led to increased local interest in forming a club.[1]

Their first race took place on 25 October 1884 from the New Inn on Bradford Road. The first club handicap was run over an eight-mile course from the Woolpack Inn, Almondbury, on 24 January 1885.

During the First World War, it was reported that all of the club's members served enlisted for service. At least one member (John Lee) was killed.

Attendance again fell after the outbreak of the Second World War and the club's annual meeting of 1940 took the decision to suspend all activities for the duration. The club officially ceased in 1946 due to a reported lack of members.[2]
