THE HOLME RERERVOIRS.

HE Fifteenth ANNUAL MEETING of the DIRECTORS of the Holme Reservoirs was held at the Ottice of the Clerk, in Holinfirth, on Wednesday last, the 29th January, when Thomas Brooke, Esq, was re-appuinted chairman of the Directors for the ensuing year, and the annual accounts were examined and allowed. The REPORT of Mr. Hill, the ENGINEER of the Directors, on the state of the Reservoirs, and the monthly return of the average height of the water in the several Reservoirs during the year X67 were produced. The following are cupies of such Report and return:

" Manchester, 27th Junuary, 1868, " To the Direetors of the Holme Reserroirs, " GENTLEMEN, —

'T made the aunml inspection of these Reservoirs on Saturday last, in company with many members of the Board.

The Boshaw Reservoir was within a iew inches of running over the Waste Weir. The pitching in the Waste Watercourse, at its junction with the discharge Tunnel alluded to in my last report, has been re-set and repaired. The whole of the workeat this Reservoir are in a satisfactory state.

"At the Holme Styes Rexervoir no repairs have been required during the past twelve months, excepting the small Vertical Pipe in the Valve Shaft, which had been split by the frost. The lining of this Reservoir seems to stand very well. The leakage is of the usual quantity, and the same colour as the water in the Reservoir.

"At Bilberry, the additional Waste Weir of 30 feet in length, has been constructed since my la-t report. The whole of the work has been well done, excepting the Asphalting of the Paving, which is defective. The cliff of rock over which the water is discharged, at the end of the Waste Watercourse. beyond the embankment, will require a little attention from time to time, So as to prevent masses of rock from being curried away, which might be retained in their position by closing the fissutes and crevices which pass behind them. The large increase in length of Overflow given by the New Weir, will enable you te discharge the largest floods of which we have any experience, with perfect safety. An inerease in the leakage took place in June last, and on examination, a defect in the puddle lining was discovered on the south side of the Reservoir: on this being made geod the volume of the leakage decreased. Since the early part of December, the water in the Reservoir has been kevt at a hicher level than usual, and a lurve quantity of surplus water has been passed away by the New Waste Weir, over which. on one occasion, the water ran 12 inches in depth. This increase in the depth of Water Stored hus, however, been attended by an increase in the leakage, duc in part no doubt to the increased pressure, and possibly to water from the New Waste Watercourse, in consequence of the defective Asphalting of the Paving. though large in quantity is perfectly clear. The careful ingpection which is exercived over the works, will ensily detect if any injurious effect is produced by the leakage.

' Additional security, in discharging tlood water, by the construction of the New Weir, at the foot of the Discharge funnel. The work has keen most substantisily dene. All the works of this Reservoir, excepting the Asphalting alluded to, are in an excellent state of repair.

"The Winding Gear and Apparatus, at cach Reservoir, is in good working order. , "Tam, Gentlemen, "Your most obedient servant, "GEO. H, HILL. Engineer."
