Huddersfield: The Town that Bought Itself

On 29 September 1920, Huddersfield became known as "the town that bought itself" after finalising the purchase the former Ramsden Estate.

During 1919, locally-born entrepreneur Samuel W. Copley acted as the "middle man" for Huddersfield Corporation and purchased the estate from Sir John Frecheville Ramsden for £1,300,000.

During 2020, the centenary will be marked by several events and activities, beginning with the re-publication online of the long-out-of-print The Ramsdens and Their Estate in Huddersfield: The Town that Bought Itself (1972) by Clifford Stephenson.
