Electrical engineer William Haigh Houghton of Stradbrook, 44 Ravensknowle Road, Dalton, died in February 1933 leaving an estate worth £10,649 primarily to his wife Margaret (née Gough) and to his brother, Herbert.[1] When Margaret died in November 1937, she left her estate:[2]

...in trust to acquire a site or sites, for, and the building, endowing and maintaining of cottage homes, with convenient gardens, within a radius of one mile of the parish church of Almondbury, such cottage homes to be occupied by aged, needy and infirm persons, inhabitants of Almondbury residing within the said radius, who for a period of 21 years have so resided, to be called the Houghton Charity.

In the event of the trust failing in the above objective, the residue was to be gifted to the Nettleton's Charity, established by Robert Nettleton, which maintained a group of almshouses built in the 1860s.
