Holmfirth Society for the Prosecution of Fellons

The Holmfirth Society for the Prosecution of Fellons was a prosecution society formed in the Holmfirth area.

Typically supported by local manufacturers and shopkeepers, the societies would bring private prosecutions in front of the local magistrates as well as offer financial rewards for the apprehension of criminals.

At their annual meeting in May 1852, held at the George Inn and chaired by auctioneer George Tinker, the treasurer reported that the society had £308 1s. 8d. It was therefore decided that "the annual subscription should be reduced from 2s. to 6d., till the funds shall fall below £200".[1]
