The following extract is from Huddersfield's Roll of Honour: 1914-1922 (2014) by J. Margaret Stansfield:
- SMITH, HERBERT E. Private. No 31449. 10th Battalion Duke of Wellington's Regiment. Born Sheepridge, Huddersfield. Second son of Mrs Smith, 30 Fenay Row, Sheepridge. Employed by Messrs J. Hopkinson and Company Limited, Birkby. Killed in action, 20.9.1917, during the Battle of Passchendaele. He was 27 years of age. Has no known grave. Commemorated TYNE COT MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING.
