History

Huddersfield Chronicle (08/Dec/1855)

The brewery was situated at the Globe Inn (also known as the Globe Hotel) on King Street, Huddersfield. It was acquired by John Sunderland Tolson after he became the licensee of the inn circa May 1853, and was run by the firm of John S. Tolson & Co.

The brewery was later acquired by wine and spirit merchant Abraham Spivey, likely when it was advertised for sale in August 1867 following Tolson's death the year before:[1]

THE GLOBE ALE & PORTER BREWERY and the WHOLESALE WINE AND SPIRIT BUSINESS TO BE DISPOSED OF, in consequence of the death of the managing partner. Inquire on the premises, Messrs John S. Tolson & Co., 41 King Street, Huddersfield.

During renovations circa 2002, the faint remains of painted signage reading "John S. Tolson & Co. / Ale and Porter Brewers" was revealed over the entrance to the yard adjoining the former Globe Hotel.
