George William Atkinson (1892-1918)

An ongoing project to commemorate and research the lives of those who appear on war memorials and rolls of honour in the local area, who served in the military, or whose deaths were linked to conflict.


George William Atkinson is known to have resided at 64 Church Street, Golcar.[1]

Huddersfield's Roll of Honour: 1914-1922

The following extract is from Huddersfield's Roll of Honour: 1914-1922 (2014) by J. Margaret Stansfield:

ATKINSON, GEORGE WILLIAM. Able Seaman. No Tyneside Z/9371. Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. HMS Egmont, RN Depot (Port Said). Eldest son of Mrs John Atkinson, 94 West End Road, Golcar. Worked as a weaver at Messrs Ben Hall and Sons, Milnsbridge. Connected with Golcar Baptist Chapel and a member of the Young Men's Bible Class. Enlisted in the Navy in March, 1916. Accidentally drowned at sea, 8.8.1918, aged 26 years. Buried in PORT SAID WAR MEMORIAL CEMETERY, EGYPT. Grave location:- Plot L, Grave 7.
