G. Holdsworth and Co.

G. Holdsworth & Co. were a photographic business based in Moldgreen.

History

Although he never gave his occupation as a photographer in census returns, it seems likely the firm was established by painter George Henry Holdsworth (1853-1895). He was born in Huddersfield on 20 July 1853, the son of warehouseman John Holdsworth and his wife Elizabeth, and was baptised on 4 September 1853 at Holy Trinity Church, Highfields. He married Ellen Rookes on 29 May 1875 at St. John the Baptist, Kirkheaton, and they had three known children: Mary Elizabeth Holdsworth, John Henry Holdsworth, and Annie Holdsworth.

If George Henry Holdsworth did indeed establish the firm, it remains uncertain who his other partners were or where his Moldgreen studio was based. However, it seems that early in his photographic career he worked with photographer Henry Krüger when he was based at Northumberland Street, Huddersfield.
