Fred Thornton (1897-1917)

Huddersfield's Roll of Honour: 1914-1922

The following extract is from Huddersfield's Roll of Honour: 1914-1922 (2014) by J. Margaret Stansfield:

THORNTON, FRED. Private. No 242187. 9th Battalion Highland Light Infantry. Born 6 Folly Road, Cowcliffe, Huddersfield, 28.10.1897. Son of Brook and Alice Thornton, 65 Netheroyd Hill Road, Cowcliffe. Educated St. John's School, Hillhouse. Employed as a beamer by Mr. D. J. Green, Bay Hall Mills, Birkby. Attended the Netheroyd Hill Congregational Sunday School and was a member of the Cowcliffe and Netheroyd Hill Liberal Club. Single. Enlisted 29.9.1916. Embarked for France 1.6.1917. Reported missing, presumed killed, on 26.9.1917, at Passchendaele, aged 19 years. Has no known grave. Commemorated TYNE COT MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING.
