Ellen Highley

Ellen Dennison was born on 3 April 1848 in Brighouse, the daughter of blacksmith John Dennison and his wife Nancy.

She married Sam Highley on April 1867 at St. John the Baptist, Halifax. The couple had ten children although two had died prior to the 1911 Census.

By 1871, they had moved to Upper Quaker Lane, Liversedge. A few years later they had moved to Broughton, Lancashire. By 1891, they were living on Firth Street, Brighouse.

At the time of the 1901 Census, they had moved to 37 Thorncliffe Street, Lindley, where Sam was working as a wire drawer. By 1911, they had moved to 84 West Street, Lindley.

Sam died aged 82 in 1927.

Ellen died aged 81 on 28 November 1929 and was buried on 2 December at Lindley Wesleyan Methodist Chapel.

Suffrage

Ellen Highley was a Suffragette and a member of the Huddersfield branch of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU).
