The Edge is aptly named for the land drops away abruptly to the south and south-west towards the more fertile valley settlements. High up on the Edge, though, despite the inhospitable soil and climate, families have lived for many centuries — first the Nicholls, who may be commemorated in Nichol Lane, and then several generations of Castles.
