Dead Man's Hole, Upperthong

This page is a bare-bones entry for a specific location. More detailed information may eventually be added...

  • appears on maps: 1892 [#36]
  • location on map: Upperthong
  • status: still exists
  • category: area
  • etymology: "hollow where a dead man was found"[1]

The 1854 map gives the name "Dead Man's Hall" but this does not appear on the 1892 map. Given that the local first series O.S. maps contain several errors, it may be that the surveyor misheard the local pronunciation of "Hole" and assumed it related to the nearby building.
