GIRL KILLED IN SIDE CAR.
A motor-cycle combination collided with a motor-car on the Halifax Old Road near Huddersfield, yesterday. The driver of the cycle, Joshua Lonsdale Sharp, of Cross Lane, Primrose Hill, had his arm broken. His fiancée, Miss Elsie May Jarrell, 20, of Greenhead Road, who was in the sidecar, was killed, and the pillion-rider, Clifford Hollingworth, of Prince Street, Primrose Hill, received head injuries.
Elsie May Jarrell was born 6 February 1905 in Huddersfield, the daughter of butcher Samuel Henry Jarrell and his wife Mary Blanche (née Idle). She was baptised on 29 March at St. Mark's, Huddersfield. At the time of the 1911 Census, the family was living at 18 Leeds Road. Elsie May's older brother, John Edward, was killed in 1918 fighting in France.
Joshua Lonsdale Sharp was born 14 August 1905 in Wigan, the son of grocer Alfred William Sharp and his wife Alice (née Taylor). Joshua also worked as a grocer and, following the accident, he married Kathleen Spencer on 7 October 1931 at Huddersfield Parish Church. He died in 1979, aged 74.
