Details

  • location: Berry Brow
  • status: partially exists
  • category: path or road

Marked on the first O.S. map, Coal Pit Lane was a path across the fields from Berry Brow up towards Coal Pit Hill near Newsome Top. As the name suggests, this was presumably the route to the nearest coal workings for residents of Berry Brow.

The construction of a new road linking Huddersfield to Newsome began in the 1870s and was referred to as "Newsome New Road" in Town Council minutes. It was then extended southwards down to Berry Brow by the summer of 1888, and was labelled Coalpit Lane / Newsome Road South on the 25" 1888 O.S. map.
