Holmfirth: Place-Names and Settlement (1994) by George Redmonds:
The "cliff" in Wooldale is a very prominent feature of the Holmfirth landscape and new land cleared there in 1515/16 referred to "clyffege, clyfhey, clyfend" and, notably, "the Brodestone in Wolledale clyff". There was certainly a small community there from c.1690, but earlier references to a family called "del Clif" may be evidence of a much earlier settlement. However the surname appears to have become extinct in the 14th century.
