Holmfirth: Place-Names and Settlement (1994) by George Redmonds:

This is a common West Riding place-name, which can be taken at face value (i.e. slag heaps), and which is often evidence of early iron smelting sites. In this case there is no reference to a settlement in the 1400s but in the mid 1500s John Guodeer (1558) and Thomas Ellys (1567) were living there. Other families at Cinder Hills, in the 1600s, were the Berrys and the Brays.
