Scrog (toponymy)

A scrog is an area covered with brushwood, scrub, thickets of bushes or stunted trees. Variant spellings include scrogg, shrogg, skrog and skrogg. The term is also sometimes linked to blackthorn and crab-apple trees (the latter being a scrog-apple).

The etymology is believed to be linked to scrag meaning a tree stump, or rough barren ground. See also hagg.

Most of the locations found were to the east of Huddersfield.
