Prior to the establishment of the West Riding Constabulary in 1856, a number of prosecution societies existed in the Huddersfield area. Typically supported by local manufacturers and shopkeepers, the societies would bring private prosecutions in front of the local magistrates as well as offer financial rewards for the apprehension of criminals.
