Holmfirth: Place-Names and Settlement (1994) by George Redmonds:
Even before the Normans arrived in England settlers of Anglian origin had cleared the woodland in this locality and converted the land to rich, butter-producing pasture. This much the place-name itself tells us. It is less certain just when the first dwellings were built, although it must have been before 1300, for a family called "de Butterley" were tenants there from at least 1274.
