Although named a "well", this appears to have been a pair of adjoining roadside water troughs situated on Northgate near the junction with Fountain Street. Water was reportedly piped to the location from Bradley Spout using an underground pot pipe (which also supplied water to the town's pinfold on Leeds Road).

Nearby locations included Wells Tavern and Wells Mills.
