Boggarding, Park Lane, Almondbury

This page is a bare-bones entry for a specific location. More detailed information may eventually be added...

  • also known as: Boggard Ing
  • location: Park Lane, Almondbury
  • status: still exists
  • category: property

The term boggard (or boggart) relates to an often malevolent or mischievous supernatural spirit, whilst an Ing may refer to a meadow or hollow, suggesting that the locale was once believed to be the haunt of a boggart — traditionally they remained in one location rather than wandering freely. Such names are often associated with locations where accidents or otherwise unexplained events occurred, which would then be blamed on the (usually invisible) boggart. As Park Lane is a steep hill, the name may have served the purpose of reminding travellers not to come down the road with undue haste.
