Initially authorised by the Huddersfield Waterworks Act of 1871, it was not fully completed until April 1904.
The reservoir is part of a descending chain of four reservoirs in the Wessenden Valley: Wessenden Head Reservoir, Wessenden Reservoir, Blakeley Reservoir and Butterley Reservoir.
