Holmfirth: Place-Names and Settlement (1994) by George Redmonds:

There are similar names elsewhere in Yorkshire, e.g. Crow Nest, Cuckoo Nest, Raven’s Nest, some of them very common. Smith (2.186) wrote an interesting piece on Crow Nest in Dewsbury, in the course of which he suggested that it was a fashionable way of naming a house, with the sense of "residence", or "retreat". One example occurs as early as 1320, but the Hepworth locality is first recorded in 1708 and figured later on Jefferys map.
