Berry Brow Mechanics' Institute was in existence by 1851 and held meetings in the "large school room attached to Salem Chapel".
By the mid 1860s, woollen cloth manufacturer Thomas Etchells of Dungeon House, Berry Brow, was the chairman of the institute.
